Design Thinking 101 and Foundations of Innovation Training - July 16-18, 2012
Participants in this 3-day workshop will leave with a deeper understanding of Design Thinking and how to facilitate
the design process with students and peers, and be prepared to teach Foundations of Innovation as a semester-long class or as a one-week summer camp program.

    NEW! Design Thinking 201 - July 19-20, 2012
This 2-day seminar is for educators who have already gone through the first (or similiar) workshop, and who want to deepen their understanding and facilitation skills. We'll bring together a group of teachers and administrators who are already incorporating Design Thinking in their work, to share stories of triumphs and challenges, and to learn new facilitation strategies that extend their Design Thinking "tool box."

    Hit the Ground Running

Here's a short list of video and written resources that will prepare you for Design Thinking 101. Please read/view them before the workshop:

Case Study: Review the ABC News video that features IDEO performing a "deep dive" to redesign a shopping cart and
respond to reflection questions. Notice the role of collaboration, creativity and communication of ideas.
Action: 20 minutes of video total in three different clips and response to questions:
     Part 1             Part 2            Part 3

Expert Source: Review Chapter 1 of the book "The Art of Innovation," by Tom Kelley with Jonanthan Littman . Tom is the brother of IDEO founder David Kelley. Use this reading to understand the goal of a deep dive, the importance of user-centered design in innovation, and different practices that support the principles of innovation.
Action: 14 pages of reading, available online through Google books

Aligned Source: Teacher Diana Laufenberg makes the case for schools that are focused on experiential learning, empowering student voice and embracing failure as a learning opportunity, goals that align well with Design Thinking.
    Action: 10 minutes of video

Curriculum Resource: Review the Introduction to the Teacher Guide for HFLI's one-semester Foundations of Innovation  course.

    Optional: In this TED Talk,
Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for a crisis in creativity and human potential, and the need for schools to do a better job helping young people retain their creativity and connect to things they are passionate about.
